Importance of Problem Solving Skills
To achieve an A* for Math in PSLE, an integrated approach is required in a child’s learning from young. All foreign Mathematics Programme in Singapore today focus on equipping the child with a strong foundation in Mathematics Operations, which involves addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division on various forms of mathematical numerals (e.g. whole numbers, fractions, decimals, etc.).
While these skills are essential, the Singapore Primary Mathematics syllabus has undergone a transformation over the last decade, shifting the focus from Mathematical Operations to Applications and Analyses in the form of Heuristic Problem-Solving.
Today, 80% of PSLE Mathematics Examination questions require the use of problem-solving skills and techniques. By gradually building up the necessary skills from a young age, a child will be better prepared to tackle these questions in the PSLE.
