#28. Question of the Week

July 5, 2019

How to solve Primary 4 heuristic problem sums involving Decimals?

John and Peter had an equal amount of money at first. After John received $108.40 from his father and Peter spent $66.20, John had thrice as much money as Peter. How much money did they have altogether at first?

Solution.

3 units − 1 unit = 2 units

108.40 + 66.20 = 174.60

2 units = 174.60

1 unit = 174.60 ÷ 2 = 87.30

87.30 + 66.20 = 153.50

153.50 + 153.50 = 307

Answer: $307
